The prototype ’Car No. 78’ was one of the all-steel 'K' type Pullmans built by the Metropolitan Carriage & Wagon Co. (Birmingham) in 1928. It served on the pre-war and post-war ‘Queen of Scots’ formation, having been specifically ordered for that service, and was retained on East Coast services until withdrawal in 1965.
